The global television phenomenon The Last of Us is once again making headlines: HBO has officially renewed the series for a third season, even before the second installment’s premiere on April 13, 2025. The network’s early commitment to this post-apocalyptic narrative, based on the iconic Naughty Dog video game, highlights not only its confidence in the project but also the worldwide devotion it has inspired.

The series starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey was one of the most-watched shows of 2023, becoming a success both critically and with audiences. Its early renewal is a rare but significant move in HBO’s content strategy.

A renewal that speaks volumes

Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of Programming at HBO, spared no praise in announcing the renewal: “We cannot overstate how proud we are at HBO of the extraordinary achievement that the second season of The Last of Us represents“. According to Orsi, the work of Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, along with the cast and crew, has taken the narrative to an exceptional level.

Craig Mazin, who is also creator, writer, and director, stated: “The final result has exceeded even our most ambitious goals“. His collaboration with Druckmann has been crucial in faithfully adapting the game universe for the screen, preserving the emotional and visual essence of the franchise.

Neil Druckmann, also a director and executive producer, highlighted the audience’s enthusiasm as a key factor in the series’ success, thanking HBO, PlayStation Productions, and Naughty Dog for their support. “We are excited to share more of The Last of Us with you“, he concluded.

What season two will bring

The second season will consist of seven episodes and will follow Joel and Ellie five years after the events of the first season. In this new chapter, both characters must face a world even more hostile, marked by internal and external conflicts that threaten the fragile bonds they still hold.

Alongside returning stars Pascal, Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, and Rutina Wesley, the new cast promises intense emotions. Notable additions include Kaitlyn Dever (Abby), Isabela Merced (Dina), Young Mazino (Jesse), and Jeffrey Wright (Isaac), reprising his role from the second game installment.

This blend of familiar and new faces allows the series to expand its universe while maintaining narrative cohesion—a key factor in the first season’s positive reception. Moreover, the special appearance of Catherine O’Hara is set to bring an unexpected twist to the unfolding events.

The future of an unstoppable franchise

With the confirmation of its third season, The Last of Us solidifies its position as one of HBO’s most ambitious productions in the last decade. The early greenlight reaffirms its status as a cornerstone of the post-apocalyptic genre, and makes clear that Joel and Ellie’s story is far from over.

Each season has shown the series’ ability to balance action, drama, and deep emotional exploration of its characters. Now that the third installment is official, the big question remains: how far is HBO willing to take this saga?
