The Slow but Inevitable Fall of Chief Reid
In Chicago P.D. season 12, fans have witnessed the arrival of Chief Deputy Reid, played by Shawn Hatosy. Initially introduced as a potential ally, the character has proven to be a calculated threat to Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and the Intelligence Unit (IU). However, according to showrunner Gwen Sigan, the battle against Reid won’t be quick or easy.
“Voight and the IU know Reid is a problem and want to get rid of him as soon as possible, but that won’t be easy,” Sigan told Hello Magazine. Reid’s position of power allows him to move cautiously and manipulate the situation to his advantage. His privileged status and intelligence make this storyline a slow burn, something uncommon in previous showdowns in the series.
Chief Reid: A More Calculated Threat Than Ever
Unlike other antagonists in the show, Reid is not a typical corrupt officer. His way of operating is much more subtle and difficult to read, making it challenging for Voight and his team to strategize. “He doesn’t say what he’s thinking or what he plans to do,” Sigan explained in the same interview, emphasizing that his unpredictability is what makes him so dangerous.
Reid has identified Voight as the true power behind the IU, so his strategy seems focused on either breaking him down or eliminating him as an obstacle. While his ultimate goal remains unclear, it is certain that he will test Voight like never before.
The season has hinted at Reid’s real plans, showing that he is gathering compromising information on IU members. With several irregularities in recent cases, his threat is not just administrative—he could dismantle the unit from within.
Voight’s Challenge: Playing a New Kind of Chess
For Hank Voight, who is used to physical confrontations and aggressive tactics, this new type of battle is an entirely different challenge. Unlike previous villains he has faced, Reid is someone who plays the long game without revealing his cards until the last moment. “That’s what makes this storyline feel so different from previous ones,” Sigan added.
Moreover, Reid’s presence increases tension within the team, as any mistake could be used against them. Shadows from the past and hidden secrets threaten to come to light, and the risk of Reid using them as leverage is a real possibility.
As the season progresses and the pressure mounts, the main question remains: Will Voight be able to neutralize the threat before it’s too late? And more importantly, at what cost?
