Death Cab for Cutie is set to commemorate two decades of Plans, their iconic fifth studio album and major-label debut. The indie rock band has announced a series of special concerts in three U.S. cities, where they will perform the album in its entirety.
A Special Anniversary for Plans
Released in 2005, Plans marked a turning point in Death Cab for Cutie’s career. It was not only their first album under a major label, but it also earned them their first GRAMMY® nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. With a mix of introspective lyrics and immersive melodies, the album features some of the band’s most beloved tracks, including Soul Meets Body, Crooked Teeth, and the unforgettable I Will Follow You into the Dark, the latter also receiving a GRAMMY® nod for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
Regarding the impact of Plans, lead singer Ben Gibbard stated: “This is an album that changed the trajectory of Death Cab for Cutie forever.” The success of the record was instrumental in cementing the band within the indie and alternative scene, bringing them to larger stages and wider audiences.

To celebrate this milestone, Death Cab for Cutie has announced three cities for their commemorative shows:

- August 5 – Chicago Theatre, Chicago, IL
- August 8 & 10 – Brooklyn Paramount, Brooklyn, NY
Additionally, the band will make a special appearance as an opening act for My Chemical Romance in New Jersey, reinforcing the mid-2000s nostalgia in a dream collaboration for indie and emo fans alike.
Presale tickets will be available starting February 13 at 10 AM (local time), while general ticket sales will begin on February 14, with different sale times depending on the city.
The Legacy of Plans and What’s Next for the Band
Since its release, Plans has been a staple in the indie music scene, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and solidifying itself as a cult classic. Its ability to blend melancholic lyrics with sophisticated sound arrangements has made it an essential album for genre enthusiasts.
The announcement of these concerts follows a sold-out global tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of Transatlanticism, as well as the release of their tenth studio album, Asphalt Meadows, which received critical acclaim. Although the band is currently working on new music, Gibbard confirmed that they couldn’t pass up the opportunity to celebrate Plans in a special way.
With a history of emotionally charged performances and impeccable production, these dates promise to be an unforgettable experience for fans. Will this mark the definitive closing of an era for Death Cab for Cutie, or is it a glimpse into what’s to come?
