Loading a car or cart with a huge bag of recycling is normal in the work of any recycler, however, facing dozens of garbage cans and bags with all kinds of waste, where an old pair of shoes is worth the same as a pepa avocado is not a pleasant task; rummaging through these marshy and dirty bags is a task that no one should assume, but that, as of July 2022, only in Bogotá, more than 25,259 recyclers have to do it, this according to the -RURO-, El Registro Only Office Recyclers of the Special Administrative Unit of Public Services -UAESP-.

Despite the commitment of many and the leadership of public and private entities, there is still a lack of awareness in waste separation. Even so, there are more and more people who are committed to its separation and deliver their waste in the most hygienic way possible to the collectors.

Jorge Arturo Sánchez Corredor is one of those new recyclers who has never opened a garbage bag to rescue the waste. In his white truck, and with the technology of Amazoniko, he travels the city on different routes collecting the waste that Amazon users have already separated and properly arranged in their homes or businesses and that they deliver to the door of their apartments or work places.

A properly separated, clean material and a dignified treatment without rummaging through the garbage, is the promise of value that Amazoniko offers for the collectors who join the platform and who join this collaborative recycling network, in which we can all contribute facing not only the care of the environment and natural resources but also the recognition of the work of professional recyclers.

Jorge, who leaves Soacha every morning to recycle in different locations in Bogotá, has his home there, where he lives with his wife and his children. After trying many areas of work, he found in recycling with Amazoniko a way to earn a decent living “I earn more money than the average recycler because thanks to Amazoniko, in addition to receiving clean and quality materials, I have acquired more knowledge about different residues and how to relate to people”.

Daniel Rodríguez Paredes, CEO of Amazóniko, comments that all the material that recyclers receive through Amazoniko is for their own benefit, that is, the collector does not have to pay anything to Amazoniko for the material that they receive from users, homes and companies. platform, adding “The idea is that the more households separate their waste better, the more recyclers will receive better income. Amazoniko’s purpose with recyclers is, supported by technology, to provide them with efficient collection routes where they receive high-quality materials. We are focused on dignifying and facilitating their work with tools for collection, classification, endowment, and even accompanying them with their formalization process and with programs such as microcredits, advances, access to healthcare work (ARL) and compensation fund”.

Acknowledging the work of the collectors is an urgent task in the city, since it largely depends on it that the usable material increases and thus the amount of waste that is reincorporated into the circular value chain. According to Luz Amanda Camacho, director of the UAESP “we are reaching Doña Juana with more than 6,200 tons -day- and we are only taking advantage of 1,200 tons”.

In this same sense, the secretary of the environment of Bogotá, Carolina Urrutia, expressed “By reducing the elements that go to Doña Juana, better management is given to the landfill, thus avoiding risks of contamination of soil, water and air. When leaving At home, waste does not cease to be our problem, but rather becomes a matter for the city The correct disposal of waste is the starting point of many environmental benefits, the use of fewer natural resources for the production of raw materials, generation of energy and production of fertilizers to enrich our soils”.

According to data from -RURO- as of July 2022, the towns with the highest number of registered recyclers are Kennedy with 17.64% (4,948 registrations), followed by Ciudad Bolívar with 10.95% (3,071), Bosa 9, 21% (2,583), Suba 8.65% (2,247), Engativá 4.77% (1,339) and Fontibón 4.13% (1,157 registrations).

Many of these collectors hope, like Jorge, to collect the waste without so much rejection (material that cannot be used due to poor separation and enlistment practices) and without having to rummage through the garbage to find their livelihood while they are key pieces for the care of the environment. planet.
