Colombian tennis player Camila Osorio achieved the best triumph of her life on Tuesday, defeating top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in the third round of the 2023 Italian Open.

Osorio, who is ranked 50th in the world, came from a set down to defeat Sabalenka 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 39 minutes. It was Osorio’s first victory over a top-five player.

“I’m very happy with my victory,” Osorio said after the match. “I knew it was going to be a tough match, but I’m glad I was able to fight back and win.”

Osorio’s victory is a major breakthrough for her career. She is now the first Colombian woman to reach the round of 16 at the Italian Open since Fabiola Zuluaga in 2008.

Osorio will next face No. 16 seed Elena Rybakina in the round of 16. Rybakina is a former junior Wimbledon champion who is currently ranked 16th in the world.

Osorio is hoping to continue her strong run in Rome and make it to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal. She will need to play her best tennis against Rybakina, but she has shown that she is capable of beating top-ranked players.
