A sonic manifesto of resistance, free femininity, and anti-patriarchal mestizo rock
On March 7, 2025, Aterciopelados released MOR, an EP that reaffirms their feminist stance and continuous musical exploration. With three songs filled with protest and humor, this release becomes a milestone in the band’s discography, maintaining their rebellious and authentic essence.
According to Estereofonica, this EP is part of Genes Rebeldes, a project that continues to challenge stereotypes and solidify Aterciopelados’ legacy in Latin American rock.
The production of MOR was led by Leonardo Castiblanco, who has collaborated with the band on multiple occasions. This work achieves a unique blend of traditional Colombian sounds with the band’s signature alternative rock. With this EP, Aterciopelados continues to demonstrate that their music is a tool for social and cultural struggle.
Beyond its musical content, MOR also stands out for its focus on visual aesthetics and symbolic storytelling. Every element, from the instrumentation to the music videos, has been designed to reinforce the message of empowerment, diversity, and authenticity that the band has championed over the years.
‘MOR’: An Anti-Diva Anthem
The title track, MOR, is an explosive rock-blues song that revives the essence of El Estuche and Cosita Seria. Its lyrics criticize the hypersexualization of the female body and the contradiction between show business and the message of “look at the essence, not the appearance.”
In an interview with El Tiempo, Andrea Echeverri described this song as “an anthem of empowerment for the untamed,” featuring special vocals by her daughter Milagros Jaramillo Echeverri, whose powerful backing vocals reinforce its anti-patriarchal message.
The blues and classic rock influences in MOR are complemented by sharp and critical lyrics, something that has been a constant in Aterciopelados’ career. The song’s structure also shows an evolution in their sound, with a more aggressive guitar riff and a solid bass line.
The music video for this track, edited by Luan Arango, follows the lyrical ceramic aesthetic introduced by Andrea Echeverri with PERÚ, which has become a fundamental part of the band’s visual identity in this musical cycle.
‘RUANA Versus BIKINI’: Irony and Ageism
The second track, RUANA Versus BIKINI, is a rock cumbia infused with pop and disco influences that satirizes social pressure around age and beauty standards.
According to Shock.co, the song features the collaboration of Ona Gabriunas, whose ethereal and delicate vocals contrast with the song’s energetic melody. Its message challenges the culture of likes and the illusions of digital success.
The music video for RUANA Versus BIKINI was directed by Diana Rico, a filmmaker who has worked on multiple projects with the band. Her work is known for combining avant-garde visual elements with narratives that reinforce the song’s message.
In the lyrics, Aterciopelados plays with visual metaphors and fashion references to confront the idea that sensuality and social validation are tied to youth. The mix of tropical sounds and guitar riffs maintains an upbeat energy that enhances the song’s irreverent nature.
‘MAMÍFERAS’: An Ode to Body Acceptance
The EP closes with MAMÍFERAS, a bambuco that transforms into a cumbia, featuring electric and acoustic guitars by Texas musician David Garza.
Rolling Stone Colombia highlights that this song is a sharp critique of fatphobia and a tribute to “females free of vanity.” Andrea Echeverri proclaims the joy of good food and good living, advocating self-acceptance in the face of imposed beauty standards.
MAMÍFERAS represents a fusion of traditional Colombian music with Aterciopelados’ signature sound. The song incorporates Andean percussion and a string arrangement that reinforces its message of connection with nature and human essence.
For the song’s music video, Milagros Jaramillo Echeverri created an animation based on her own radical feminist drawings, giving the track a unique and personal visual dimension.
A Production with Visual Identity
Each song on MOR will have its own music video. Diana Rico (director of Florecita Rockera) will direct the video for RUANA Versus BIKINI, while Luan Arango will edit the video for MOR, maintaining Andrea Echeverri‘s ceramic lyrical aesthetic. Meanwhile, Milagros Jaramillo Echeverri will create an animated video based on her own radical feminist drawings for MAMÍFERAS.
Beyond the music, the visual aesthetics of this era of Aterciopelados reinforce their message of rebellion and authenticity. Ceramics, handcrafted art, and vibrant colors have become essential elements of their visual identity.
This EP stands out not only for its musical quality and message but also for the way it integrates multiple artistic expressions to create a complete experience. From the music production to the graphic identity, every detail has been carefully crafted to convey the band’s spirit of resistance and creativity.
With this release, Aterciopelados reaffirms their musical evolution and commitment to disruptive, defiant, and authentic rock. MOR is not just an EP but a sonic manifesto that invites reflection and the celebration of diversity. How far will they continue to push the boundaries of art and music?
