If you’re a fan of the Yellowstone universe, then you won’t want to miss 1923, the latest prequel series. Set in historic Montana, the show follows the next two generations of the Dutton family as they struggle to survive during a time of drought, lawlessness, and prohibition.
The storyline follows the Duttons in the days before John Dutton (Costner) took over running the famous ranch. The series, created by Taylor Sheridan, features a star-studded cast, including Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton, the husband and wife team who run Yellowstone Ranch.
The story focuses on the next two generations of the Dutton family as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness, and prohibition, as well as an epidemic of cattle rustling, all under the cloud of the Montana Great Depression that preceded the nation by almost a decade. The drama will have two seasons and is divided into eight episodes.
Harrison Ford describes the story as having a strong moral context, stating that “The Duttons live by a code of behavior that they impose on themselves and that requires complicated moral and ethical judgment. It’s not just physically tough. The challenges they face from modernity, challenges to their way of life, their freedom, and the opportunities they’ve enjoyed, are a big part of the story.”
A Star-Studded Cast
The series boasts an impressive cast, led by Hollywood legends Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. James Badge Dale plays John Dutton Sr., the right-hand man to the series’ protagonist. Meanwhile, Darren Mann and Michelle Randolph portray the Duttons’ descendants, Jack and Mary. Marley Shelton takes on the role of Emma, John’s wife, and Brandon Sklenar plays Jacob’s nephew, Spencer.
An Epic Tale of Survival
1923’s gripping drama takes place during a challenging time in Montana’s history. The Duttons face numerous obstacles, including a historic drought, lawlessness, and the prohibition era. Meanwhile, cattle thefts and the looming threat of the Great Depression make their survival even more challenging. The series covers two seasons, giving viewers plenty of time to get invested in the characters’ journeys.
Ford and Mirren Reunite
The series marks a reunion for Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, who previously starred together in the 1986 film The Mosquito Coast. The pair delivers impressive performances as Jacob and Cara Dutton, the husband and wife team who run Yellowstone Ranch. Their dynamic onscreen chemistry is a highlight of the show.
A Strong Moral Message
In an interview with Variety, Harrison Ford emphasized the show’s strong moral message. “The Duttons live according to a code of behavior that they impose upon themselves, and it requires complicated moral and ethical judgment,” he explained. “Their physical lives are tough, but the challenges they face from modernity, challenges to their way of life, their freedom, and the opportunities they’ve enjoyed, are a big part of the story.”
Taylor Sheridan, the creator of the series, is also the showrunner of other popular shows, such as “Mayor of Kingstown,” which stars Jeremy Renner and has been renewed for a second season.
